Trans bakery owner serves up desserts for all during Pride month
When some bakeries refused to make wedding cakes for same-sex couples, self-taught Chicago baker Jenni Vee decided to open up her own bakeshop.The trans woman wanted to create a business that welcomes everyone and it’s thriving five years later.
WHAT WE DO
Baker Della is far “too busy” to make her recently-out lesbian goddaughter a cake for her wedding. Della, of course, isn’t too busy. She just doesn’t want to make a wedding cake for a gay couple, and her husband, plumber Tim could not agree more.
History
“The Cake” is the second play at the theater where Cabral and Leahy acted as a married couple. In 2019, they were in “August: Osage County,” and it was in that show that the theater’s artistic director, David Drake, decided he wanted them back again.
Working together
The experience working together on stage has been rewarding, Leahy and Cabral said recently at their house on Commercial Street. The plays have engendered discussions, allowing for more exploration in their personal relationship.
“We were so supportive of each other, and we were so into making this thing between us be real, to feel authentic,” Cabral said.
