THE HINT OF A MASTERPIECE - Jumboo-Creast

THE ARTIST NEEDS TO BE PART OF THE SOCIETY

Painter is the big one. He established himself as one of the top prep pitchers in the country because of his combination of size, stuff and feel for pitching. He is 6-foot-7 and 215 pounds with a fastball that sits in the 94-96 mph range and touches 97 mph. He throws a four-seam fastball, sinker, curveball, slider and changeup. He went 6-1 with a 0.31 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 45 1/3 innings as a senior, earning Florida’s Gatorade Player of the Year Award.

TECHNIQUES OF PHOTOGRAPHY

In this summer of pent-up travel, millions and millions of photos are being taken outdoors. Whether the photographers are trying to capture the perfect sunset, the classic landscape shot or simply a great picture of their kid kayaking, hiking or boating, they all encounter the same challenges of composition and light.

How did you get into painting?

I literally am our scholar. I went to school, first in my family. I picked the University of Missouri because I visited on a warm winter day. It was 60 degrees in Missouri but it was minus 10 in Chicago. Got into Princeton. Mizzou gave me a full ride academically, but I picked it because of the weather. Chicago Scholars helps people pick the right school from a myriad of factors. Not the weather.

What was your first painting like?

Avoiding any distracting elements and observing animal behaviors are the key elements to capturing natural wildlife images, so there is always a need to see outside the image to seek out the best opportunities. There have been times, for example, when moving away from the fence has provided better images, and permitted me to see the animals move to new and better location

Reaching into the enclosure requires a lens with a longer focal length, typically above 200mm. Taking an image up close to the fence with a wide aperture will avoid wire fence distractions, but stepping away can also throw the fence out of focus. These lenses can be heavy, so the use of a monopod or tripod will provide relief and stability (though be aware that not all venues will allow you to set up a tripod).

Three young Seattle-area artists are designing limited-edition ORCA cards in anticipation of King County Metro Transit’s RapidRide expansion. Cultural funding agency 4Culture and partners King County Metro Transit and RapidRide have developed an art plan in conjunction with three new RapidRide lines that will be introduced over the next few years. One of the opportunities of the art plan was for three young artists to design an ORCA card corresponding to the upcoming H, G, and I lines. 4Culture recently announced the selected artists: Jovita Mercado, Yasiman Ahsani, and Rey Daoed.

Seek out areas of shade and light, and use these to naturally illuminate the animal as it walks through. Food and playing with an enrichment is a big lure, which make a good focal point to preplan a shot. Try to avoid simple distractions in the frame that may appear unnatural (like people, trash cans and fences), as these will take effort to remove in post-production.

“We wanted to do one special-edition card for each of those lines as they start service,” said Laura Becker, the senior public art project manager at 4Culture. “We have very few opportunities for young and emerging artists in public art. That’s something that we are committed to focusing on.”
